Section 504 is a broad civil rights law protecting the rights of individuals in programs and activities that receive federal funding form the U.S. Department of Education. The law protects all school-age children who qualify as "handicapped" according to the definitions described below. Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 states: "No otherwise qualified individual with handicaps in the United States shall, solely by reason of her or is handicap, as defined in section 706(8) of this title, be excluded form the participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance or under any program or activity conducted by any Executive agency or by the United States Postal Service" (Sec.794).
The Township of Union Public School district does not discriminate in admission or access to, treatment or employment in its programs and activities in accordance with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and ADA.
Questions regarding Section 504 should be directed to Gregory Tatum, Assistant Superintendent of Schools, and to the Section 504 designee in each of the district's schools. The Section 504 designee for Union High School is Lucille Williams (908-851-6883).
